Cleveland Library Workers Receive 3% Raises

More than 400 librarians, clerks, and custodians at the Cleveland Public Library will get annual raises of 3% for three years, thanks to an agreement finalized August 24 by an arbitration panel and made effective the following day.

After a one-day strike in April, members of the Service Employees International Union Local 1199 agreed to binding arbitration in May, averting an indefinite strike, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported August 26.

In return for the renewed contract, which had expired in February, the union compromised on a key demand, allowing the library to outsource some technical services.
