Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library OpensHundreds of Lincoln buffs joined Illinois officials October 14 to celebrate the opening of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, an event delayed for more than a year by unanticipated construction problems, the Associated Press reported. The three-story facility features a 47,000-item Lincoln collection, some 1,500 manuscripts written by the 16th president, and more than 200 personal and family items. It also houses the Illinois State Historical Library and its collection of 12 million documents and artifacts related to the state’s history.“We hope you will agree it was worth the wait,” Library Director Richard Norton Smith told the crowd. This was the second opening ceremony for the library, which was the site of a dedication party November 18 for which then-Gov. George Ryan could play host before leaving office. The adjoining Lincoln Museum, still incomplete, is scheduled to open in spring 2005. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced that the library and museum will be the centerpiece of the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth in 2009. Posted October 15, 2004. |
