Man Arrested for Adding X-Rated Pictures to Library Videos

The staffs of two downstate Illinois libraries are currently reviewing their videotape collections after finding pornographic images added after the closing credits. Decatur police said in the September 30 Decatur Herald and Review that material, most of it pornographic, was added to more than 250 videotapes in the Decatur Public Library collection. None of the tapes were from the children’s collection.

After City Librarian Lee Ann Fisher filed a complaint September 15, police obtained a court order to obtain the name of the last person to check out the altered tapes. ABC affiliate WAND-TV reported that police arrested 40-year old Randall Wells of Decatur September 30. During a search of the suspect’s home, police found five library videocassettes altered in a similar manner as the other tapes.

Wells is out on bond and faces charges of criminal damage to library materials. Arraignment is scheduled for October 26. Fisher told the Herald and Review that Wells has been banned from the library for life and that the staff has been working to find which tapes in the collection were altered and remove them from circulation.

The staff of the Mount Zion District Library pulled its collection of 2,700 tapes from circulation after an altered tape was discovered September 24. Mount Zion police suspect Wells was involved with those alterations as well.
