San Francisco Director Susan Hildreth Accepts Tucson Post

Susan Hildreth, San Francisco Public Library director since 2001, has accepted the directorship of the Tucson-Pima (Ariz.) Public Library, to commence July 19. The May 14 announcement came as a surprise to some who thought she would succeed recently retired California State Librarian Kevin Starr. Others speculated that the decision was tied to a recent flap over the use of RFID technology at SFPL.

In a May 17 press release from his Library Users Association, local agitator and RFID opponent Peter Warfield implied that the resignation was the result of the San Francisco board of supervisors’ decision to establish a citizens advisory committee to oversee branch operations and expansion. Hildreth told American Libraries that her decision to leave San Francisco had nothing to do with flak over her support of RFID technology. She also pointed out that SFPL’s “branch bond program is well underway, the real estate acquisition is nearly complete,” and that these are among the achievements of which she is most proud.

Hildreth said she had expressed interest in the state librarian position, but the Tucson job represented a chance to scale down and take advantage of “the weather, the cost of living, and the quality of life there.” She acknowledged that part of the new job’s appeal was “an environment where the city manager and his team welcome department heads who are willing to take on assignments that may be a little bit out of the box and outside their expertise.”

Hildreth has spent 24 years in California libraries. She joined SFPL in 1998 as deputy librarian and was named city librarian three years later. She replaces Agnes Griffen, who retired from TPPL last June.
