University of Texas at San Antonio Staffer Charged with Felony Theft
A former University of Texas at San Antonio library employee has been charged with stealing more than $200,000 in fines for overdue or lost books and videos from 1997 to 2003. Gloria C. Gonzales, 34, was indicted by a Bexar County grand jury April 29 on one count of misapplication of funds and one count of felony theft, both first-degree crimes punishable by five to 99 years in prison, the May 5 San Antonio Express-News reported.
A 2003 audit had disclosed the shortages, prompting an investigation. “Because it was a low-level function, it escaped scrutiny,” UTSA spokesman David Gabler said.
A prosecutor told the Express-News that Gonzales had been a library employee since 1994, but did not have the authority to close out registers until 1997.
