Flood Damage Shuts North Kansas City Library

A sewer backup caused by heavy rain flooded the North Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library May 19, causing as much as $20,000 in damage.

A library staffer arrived early Wednesday morning to find two inches of water covering the facility’s carpeted bottom floor, the Kansas City Star reported May 21.

Mayor Gene Burns said cleanup, which could cost up to $20,000, would require replacing the carpeting and installing valves on the sewer line to prevent the problem from recurring.

Director Jobeth Bradbury said she didn’t know when the library—which also serves as the media center for the North Kansas City High School—would reopen. “We just keep telling ourselves that nobody got hurt, that it’s something we can handle,” she said.
