$10 Million Gift Ensures New Library for University of Nevada at RenoThe University of Nevada at Reno will begin work on a new central library in spring 2005, thanks to a $10-million donation from a slot-machine manufacturer and its chairman emeritus. University officials announced the matching $5-million gifts from the Reno-based International Game Technology and from former IGT Chairman Chuck Mathewson and his wife, Ann, at a March 16 news conference, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported March 17. UNR President John Lilley said the donation is the largest single gift ever made to a campuswide project, adding that he will ask the Nevada Board of Regents to approve naming the new facility the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center in June. The funds will ensure the construction of a $66-million replacement facility for UNR’s 42-year-old Getchell Library. The state legislature has already approved $22 million for the project, and student fees and tuition will provide another $22 million. With $9 million in private gifts already secured, the university only needs to raise another $3 million to complete the funding Plans call for the new 285,000-square-foot library to house an art gallery and an auditorium that can be used for film festivals.
