Akron Trustees Reconsider Borrowing to Restore CutsAkron–Summit County (Ohio) Public Library trustees are divided over a proposal to borrow on a 1.4-mill operating levy passed in early March. At a March 19 finance committee meeting, Chairman Jack Morrison Jr. questioned a decision made just a day earlier by the personnel committee to borrow $3.8 million on the levy—which doesn’t go into effect until next year—in order to restore some of the cuts made in December 2003. “I want to tighten our belts and limp through the rest of the year,” Morrison said in the March 19 Akron Beacon-Journal. He suggested that borrowing only $2 million would still allow the library to make some changes while lowering the overall cost of the loan. Director Steven Hawk stuck by the proposal to borrow $3.8 million, which would add 121 jobs, restore employee pay that had been cut 6.7%, and resume normal hours at the branches and main library. “We can’t put everything back in ’04,” he said at the personnel committee meeting. “We are choosing the things that we think are most important.” The full board is scheduled to meet March 30.
