Gómez Named Urban Libraries Council President

Martín Gómez, executive director of the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library since early 2002, has been named president of the Urban Libraries Council (ULC), an association of metropolitan-area public libraries and the corporations that serve them.

“Martín brings the essence of the urban library experience to this role and that will help him speak strongly to the contributions libraries make to city life,” said ULC Board Chair-elect Donna Nicely.

“I feel very honored and excited about having the opportunity to take on what I consider to be one of the best positions in the public library world,” Gómez told American Libraries. “I’m also really excited about getting a chance to work among peers in terms of the urban library setting.”

Gómez previously served as executive director of Brooklyn (N.Y.) Public Library and director of Oakland (Calif.) Public Library. He will start at ULC August 2, filling the role vacated by Eleanor Jo (Joey) Rodger, who will begin serving as director of the Pendle Hill Peace Network in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, September 1.

Founded in 1972, ULC is based in Evanston, Illinois, and serves approximately 140 member libraries and corporations.
