Erie County Delays Three Branch Closings by One Month

County officials announced June 30 that three branches of the Erie County (Pa.) Public Library scheduled to close July 1 would remain open at least through the end of the month, thanks to a one-time transfer of funds from a library acquisitions account.

Acting County Executive John Onorato authorized the transfer of $50,766 from the book account to the Presque Isle, Millcreek Mall, and Edinboro branches, but he warned that it was a stopgap measure that could not be repeated, the July 1 Erie Times-News reported. As a precaution, the administration is sending notices to branch staff that they could be laid off August 1.

Onorato and other council members hope to reach an agreement to keep the branches open longer. “This is up in the air,” he said. “We would hope to be able to work with council for a long-range plan. If the month passes and action is not taken by council, then the branches will not be funded.”

County Executive Rick Schenker, who was on a trade mission in China at the time of the announcement, has been at odds with the council over a long-range solution to funding all six branches. Originally favoring a plan for three regional branches with expanded hours, Schenker closed the Southeast and Liberty branches June 7, despite a lawsuit brought against him by the council.

More recently, Schenker has advocated some evening and Saturday hours at three of the remaining branches, with the Millcreek Mall branch open only two days of the week.
