Library Consumer Health Programs Win NCLIS Awards

The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science announced July 30 the winners of its 2004 Blue Ribbon Consumer Health Information Recognition Awards for Libraries. One public, academic, government, or hospital library in each of 37 states received the recognition, based on nominations from state library agencies.

One winning entry was the Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury, Vermont, whose Collier Health Information Center was developed in conjunction with the Porter Medical Center. “One of the features of this collection is that anyone in the county is offered free borrowing privileges,” Library Director David Clark told American Libraries. “We’ve opened it to anyone who comes in.”

Award winners were chosen based on the success of the library’s consumer health information program, with emphasis on its public impact, innovativeness, and replicability. Winning entries will be profiled in a report, which NCLIS will release in the fall, on best practices in distributing consumer health information through libraries.
