Hennepin County Seeks to Waive Salary Limit in Director SearchIn the search for a new director of the Hennepin County Library in Minnetonka, Minnesota, county commissioners have asked the state for an exception to the legislated salary cap for all local government employees at 95% of the governor’s salary of $120,000. The request seeks a salary limit of $130,000 for the position vacated in early February by Charles M. Brown, who accepted the job of director of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Commissioners chose to ask for that amount because the Department of Employee Relations recently granted the Minneapolis Public Library a new compensation limit of $130,000 for its executive director. Commissioner Mike Opat said in the February 19 Sun newspapers of suburban Minneapolis that the state limit was “ridiculous” and that applicants with advanced degrees should still be able to make a good living in the public sector. “But we don’t want to make executive salaries as high as we can, either,” he added. Commissioner Randy Johnson estimated that Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty probably makes close to $238,000 if non-salaried perks are taken into consideration. The board of commissioners voted 5–2 at its February 10 meeting to make the request. One of the two opposed to the motion was Commissioner Penny Steele, who told the newspaper that the county should look for in-house candidates. “We have employees who aren’t getting cost-of-living raises this year,” she said. “We shouldn’t be raising the salaries of our administrators.” Posted February 20, 2004. |
