Stuffed Birds Ruffle Feathers in Rowley

For more than a year, the question of whether to display a collection of stuffed birds at the new Rowley (Mass.) Public Library has been the subject of meetings, town votes, and public debate.

Until now, the collection of 400 mounted birds—donated to the community in the 1920s by taxidermist Charles A. Houghton—has been stored in a section of the Town Hall inaccessible to the public. Ed Des Jardins, a member of the town historical society, has campaigned to move at least some of the birds to the library lobby. But library trustees last year voted down that idea, calling the collection “stagnant” and better suited to a museum, the Boston Globe reported February 2.

When the issue was then brought to voters in a referendum submitted by Des Jardins, residents approved the idea of a library display 531–276. Trustees relented, but another debate soon arose over exactly where to put the display case in the library.

“We’re getting tired of this because we’ve had important issues to deal with in this town,” said Selectman Chairman A. J. Paglia. “This is really embarrassing.”
