Hurricane Charley a Windfall for Damaged Dundee LibraryAlthough Hurricane Charley was responsible for 27 deaths and $7.4 billion in damage to homes in Florida, the August 13 storm turned out to be a stroke of luck for the Dundee Public Library. Housed in a mobile home adjacent to the town hall, the library suffered major structural damage without getting many of its books wet, the Winter Haven News Chief reported August 27.In desperately searching for a temporary home for the 12,000-volume collection, Library Director Thelma Jones called on the Adams Building Materials Company, which had recently vacated a warehouse in Dundee. Vice President Aaron Adams agreed to donate the 250,000 square feet of space and electrical power to the library as the firm’s contribution to the community. “Adams was much more generous than I thought possible,” Jones told the News Chief. “When I got the call back from him, that’s when I really lost it.” The Tampa Bay Library Consortium aided in moving DPL’s books and furnishings to the new location August 26, where it will reopen in September in a space that is 25 times larger than its former home. Jones expects to remain in Adams’s former warehouse for a year as she organizes an effort to build a new facility. Posted August 27, 2004. |
