
However, Hafeman released a statement disputing the board’s contentions, charging that “Undated memos with vague observations do not necessarily reflect matters as they truly are.” The August 2 Journal Sentinel said Hafeman found “especially troubling” allegations of “communication issues and fiscal mismanagement,” stating that “Nothing has been brought to my attention regarding any statements I have made. I am always respectful. . . . No problems have been investigated, to my knowledge. I haven’t been made aware of any problem.”
In an undated memo obtained by the newspaper, board president Susan Nelson says that the library exceeded its 2003 budget, and “Bob has been asked to provide details of what caused the overrun. . . . So far he has not provided any details.” She adds that Hafeman “once again ignored” a board policy and asked the library foundation, without board approval, to release $50,000 to purchase books.
“All funds secured on behalf of the library have been obtained and spent with the best interests of the library at heart,” responded Hafeman. “I have broken no rules regarding funding. No requests for funds have been made inappropriately.” He added, “I am proud of the work I have done here. I hold my head high.”
