Fired Mooresville Director Rehired

John Pritchard, the Mooresville (N.C.) Public Library director whose June 23 firing without public explanation prompted more than 1,000 residents to sign a petition demanding his reinstatement, has been rehired effective August 30.

In an agreement worked out through a mediator, Pritchard acknowledged that Town Manager Rick McLean had reason to fire him, while McLean agreed to accept the town board’s recommendation to rehire him, the Charlotte Observer reported August 27. The town will cover the mediation costs, and Pritchard will be paid half his salary for July and August, will receive credit for any lost vacation and sick days, and will receive $2,500 for attorney’s fees and insurance expenses.

“I think we’ve got a good librarian,” said Commissioner Mitchell Mack. “I think he’s ready to go back to work.”
