Regina PL Board Approves Closures; Friends Vow to Continue Fight

The Regina (Saskatchewan) Public Library board voted 6–2 March 30 not to request a mill-rate tax increase for its 2004 budget, thus forcing three branches, its Dunlop Art Gallery, and the Prairie History Room to close by May 1 as scheduled, the Regina Leader-Post reported April 1. Library Director Sandy Cameron told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation March 31 that the board was simply following the recommendations made by a task force appointed to review the library’s plan.

The new budget does call for the three branches to reopen in the fall as “temporary service centers,” although Cameron said he had no details yet on what the function of the centers would be.

The library’s Friends group, which has actively opposed the closures since they were first announced in November 2003, plans to address the decision at a meeting April 5 when the city council will rule on the validity of the Friends’ 26,000-name petition that could force the city to provide funds to keep the facilities open.

“This is only round one,” said Friends cochair Vanessa Thorson. “This will not be forgotten by the citizens of Regina. Six [board members] voted to destroy our library system.” Thorson told the Leader-Post that she hopes to change a few minds by the time council meets to approve the library’s budget April 13.
