Eugene Book-Theft Suspect in Custody

Police in Eugene, Oregon, have charged a local man with first-degree theft of books from the University of Oregon’s Knight Library. Douglas Collver, 33, turned himself in to his probation officer on March 29, according to the April 6 Oregon Daily Emerald, the University of Oregon campus newspaper. Collver became the primary suspect after police found stolen library materials and computer records in his apartment that showed Collver sold over 200 books in Internet auctions.

Collver is also being charged with selling stolen property and online fraud. Four Oregon counties have seven outstanding warrants for his arrest.

University Librarian Deborah Carver told the Emerald that they are comparing the computer records the police obtained to determine which, if any, of the other books belonged to the library. But because the auction listings did not have exact titles, she said it will be a long process.

Carver added that rare book dealers do not usually buy books with library seals. Selling stolen books might work for a while, she said, “but eventually someone will alert the owning library.”
