Strike Deadline Looms at Cleveland Public Library

The union representing Cleveland Public Library employees has set an April 20 strike deadline. Steward Ryan Moore of the Service Employees International Union Local 1199, which represents 407 of the system’s 735 workers, said in the April 3 Cleveland Plain Dealer that the library is demanding staff concessions in health care, leave, transfers, and outsourcing. The union seeks annual salary increases of 5–5.5% over the next three years; management has offered just 1% a year.

Head of Human Resources Sharon Tufts would not discuss the negotiations but told the Plain Dealer she was optimistic a strike will be avoided.

A three-year contract set to expire after 2002 was extended through 2003; after an additional two-month extension, it finally expired in March.

In May 2003 Cleveland voters passed a five-year library levy that will generate $31.5 million annually.
