University of Georgia Repairs Delayed

Although University of Georgia officials hoped to complete repairs to the main library’s second floor—which suffered $1.5 million in damages in a July 23 fire—by the end of 2003, officials now say it may be fall 2004 or later before the overhaul is complete.

The repairs are “just taking longer than I thought it would take to get done,” UGA librarian and associate provost Bill Potter said in the January 7 Athens Banner-Herald.

So far, 70,000 ceiling tiles and hundreds of light fixtures have been replaced, and the damaged area has been blasted with dry ice to eliminate the smell of smoke. Books and bookshelves were moved to a university-owned warehouse. “What they did was recreate the second floor to make it easier when a book needs to be retrieved,” explained Jean Cleveland, communications director for the university’s library system, noting that students can get books within 24 hours.

Still to be completed is the installation of a fire alarm and sprinkler system, now required by the state fire code.

Jason Allen Nelms, 19, who was charged with first-degree arson for setting the fire, pleaded not guilty to the charges; a trial date has not been set.
