Senate Confirms President’s NCLIS NomineesThe Senate voted January 26 to confirm the 12 nominees submitted by President Bush to be members of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, restoring the commission to its full 16-member roster. In an e-mail message to the confirmed nominees, NCLIS Executive Director Robert Willard told them that the four months it took Congress to confirm them was “about a month longer than average.” He noted that the four days it took to confirm Jeanne Simon’s initial appointment in 1993 “will likely always hold the record [for speed],” adding, “It’s good to be married to a senator.” After her husband Paul Simon (D-Ill.) left the Senate, Willard pointed out, her 1997 reappointment “languished on Capitol Hill for six months.” C. E. “Abe” Abramson, who was nominated in 1995, “holds the record for patience,” Willard observed, “as his nomination remained on the Hill 245 days (eight months) before approval.” Posted January 30, 2004. |
