Georgetown Branch to Reopen in 2010

Renovation of the District of Columbia Public Library’s Georgetown branch, which was severely damaged by an April 30 fire, is expected to be complete by September 2010. DCPL officials said that the damage to the branch’s map collections, photos, and oil paintings was not as extensive as they had originally thought. Branch Manager Mary Hernandez estimated that more than 80% of the holdings in the Peabody Room, which contained irreplaceable artifacts and documents on Georgetown’s history, had been saved.

Further restoration is expected to cost more than $20 million. Moses Alexander Greene, a spokesman for the D.C. mayor’s office, said in the Georgetown University newspaper The Hoya for September 7 that the city is “looking at all the proposals for what specifically will be changed about the library, and the process has been going very well.”

The city has also filed a lawsuit seeking $13 million in damages from Dynamic Corporation, the contractor that had been conducting renovations to the branch. A subcontractor for Dynamic was using electric heat guns to remove lead-based paint from the second-floor windows when the fire broke out and fire investigators concluded that this had started the blaze, according to the August 30 Georgetown Voice.
