Indiana Library Recalls Tainted Summer-Reading ToysGreenwood (Ind.) Public Library has recalled 150 bendable toy dinosaurs it used as an incentive prize in its 2007 Summer Reading program. An August 27 announcement on the library’s web site said that the lead content of the dinosaur was nearly double the acceptable level. The dinosaur was given to children from preschool through 5th grade; a separate group of toys given to babies and toddlers in the program had no problems. “The Board of Health says it’s not like it’s critical, but it’s something we don’t want kids putting in their mouths,” GPL spokesperson Jane Weisenbach told local CBS affiliate WISH-TV August 28. The distributor, Kipp Brothers of Carmel, Indiana, said that it had tested the toys for lead before purchasing them and found them to be within acceptable limits. President and CEO Bob Glenn told WISH-TV he’s asking the Marion County Health Department to re-test the toys and readying a nationwide recall of almost 4,400 dinosaurs in the event the results are positive. “We want to understand why. We want to go back to the manufacturer and say, ‘You sent us one thing, we tested it, why do we have something else?’” GPL said that in the future it will have all prizes tested by the Johnson County Health Department before distribution. Kipp Brothers was one of the distributors of bendable cat-and-dog toys used as summer reading incentives at many libraries last year that were also recalled due to lead content.
