Senate Committee Approves Presidential Libraries BillThe Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved August 1 the Presidential Library Donation Reform Act (H.R. 1254). Similar to the House version of the bill that passed 39034 March 14, H.R. 1254 would require all presidential library fundraising organizations to disclose information on any donation above $200 for a minimum period of four years after the end of a president’s term. As the fundraising information is received, the National Archives would make it publicly available online. In addition, the legislation passed by the Senate committee requires any presidential library already in the federal system to make quarterly reports on donations of $1,250 and higher, which proactively applies to the fundraising foundations for the sitting president as well as any others who are alive at the time of the bill’s passage, the National Coalition for History reported August 1. Committee member Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) contended that the bill was unfair as it would require President Bush, who is still in the process of raising funds, to reveal his donors, Congressional Quarterly reported August 1.
