Colorado Man Investigated in Massive Theft SchemeA Denver man is being investigated for allegedly checking out more than $45,000 worth of materials, largely DVDs, from four area library systems with the intent to sell them online. Thomas Pilaar, 33, is suspected of getting seven library cards under different names from Denver Public Library, checking out 300 items per card, and selling at least some of the borrowed materials, the Rocky Mountain News reported August 3. He is also suspected in similar thefts of about 300 items each from Aurora Public Library and the public library systems in Arapahoe and Douglas Counties. A woman who bought some of the stolen books through Craigslist.org and noticed library identification stamps notified authorities, the Associated Press reported August 5. Librarians were already investigating, however. “When it turned out that somebody was racking up a couple of hundred DVDs within a few days, our staff noticed it,” wrote Douglas County Library Director James LaRue on the Castle Rock, Colorado, community website Yourhub.com August 7. “We compared notes with other libraries, where we saw the same pattern. We consulted our security cameras, and have quite an excellent picture of the thief, as well as all of our computer records.” Pilaar was arrested in early August on an unrelated parole violation, and is being held without bond. The Denver District Attorney’s office is considering charges against him. Posted on August 10, 2007. |
