Sacajawea Library Arson Price Tag Skyrockets

The estimated damage from a September 8 arson fire that destroyed the media center at the Sacajawea Middle School in Spokane, Washington, rose to $1.3 million in early November. An earlier estimate had set the damage at only $300,000, the amount used in setting restitution payments by the three youths accused of setting the blaze.

One youth, 15-year-old Harrison M. Seaborn, pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, second-degree arson, and first-degree malicious mischief in juvenile court November 7. He must serve 75 days of detention and pay $100,000 to the school, according to the November 9 Spokane Spokesman Review. Codefendants Quinten M. Glenn and Cody L. Baker would also have to make payments if convicted.

Court documents revealed that Seaborn and Glenn had also broken into the school July 21 in an attempt to burn the library, but were scared off by a security guard and a burglar alarm.

Mark Anderson, associate superintendent for the Spokane School District, told the paper that two portable buildings were on order to replace the library and an adjoining classroom and would be ready for use in December. School officials hope to have the library rebuilt by next July.
