Indictment in Gould Theft from Canadian National Library

A Texas woman has been indicted for allegedly stealing items from Library and Archives Canada’s Glenn Gould collection in Ottawa and selling them in New York City.

Barbara Moore, 62, is accused of stealing the material while doing research at the Ottawa library in the late 1980s, the Associated Press reported May 12. The items, which the pianist donated to the library before his death in 1982, include photographs, books, compositions, recordings, published and unpublished writings, correspondence, doodles, and personal items such as hats and gloves.

Moore contacted a New York dealer by e-mail in December 2004 and offered to sell him items that she said were from her own collection, said Jennifer Kushner, spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office. A year later, Canadian Gould scholar Kevin Bazzana, who wrote the biography Glenn Gould: The Performer in the Work, recognized a page of Gould’s doodles that was listed for sale on the dealer’s website, the CBC News reported May 14.

After Canadian library officials contacted the New York Police Department’s Cyber Crimes Unit in January, the items were recovered and the case was referred to prosecutors. Moore has been charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, with a maximum sentence of seven years. She was also charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and third-degree attempted grand larceny, which could bring up to four years.
