Michigan Teen Gets Detention, Therapy for Library Assault

Calling him a predator who is likely to commit sexual assault again, Livingston County Juvenile Court Referee Kathleen M. Oemke sentenced a 13-year-old boy, with “ongoing behavioral problems,” to 127 days detention, sex-offender therapy, and two years of court-monitored supervision March 20 in conjunction with the molestation of a 7-year-old girl at the Brighton (Mich.) District Library last December.

Posing as a library volunteer, the boy, whose identity is being withheld, reportedly lured the girl into the bathroom and assaulted her, according to the March 21 Ann Arbor News. He pleaded guilty February 3 to second-degree criminal sexual conduct and gross indecency. Two other charges—first-degree criminal sexual conduct and accosting for immoral purposes—were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

According to a March 21 Associated Press report, Oemke told the teen, after he faced the girl at the sentencing and apologized, “The problem is, while you are very sincere, we have not yet addressed what got you to this point of having to act out in this way. You need help.”

Another hearing is slated for April 25 to determine if the boy qualifies for treatment at a long-term residential treatment center in Iowa or Wyoming that specializes in treating juvenile sex offenders, the News reported.
