The mayor’s salary is $66,473, according to the June 26 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Damaske told the paper that it would cost $28,000 to $30,000 to open the library on Sundays during the school year, but that he did not want to increase the tax levy.
The library is already open 64 hours per week, not including Sundays.
In his 2005 campaign and during an effort to hire a full-time city administrator, Damaske had pledged to reduce the mayor’s job from full-time to part-time. A nonbinding referendum to make the mayor’s job part-time passed in April with nearly two-thirds support.
