Branch Manager Injured When Teens Crash into Columbus LibraryThe manager of the Livingston branch of the Columbus (Ohio) Metropolitan Library suffered a broken arm February 6 when three youths rammed a stolen Cadillac through the wall of the main office. Shirley W. Freeman, 54, was pinned behind her desk by the vehicle and underwent surgery the next day to place pins and plates in her left arm. She also sustained injuries to her left leg, which is in a brace.“From what could have happened, I am a miracle,” Freeman said in the February 9 Columbus Dispatch. “Nothing happened to my head and yet that car was less than 12 inches from my head.” Columbus police arrested two teens in connection with the crash and charged them with delinquency counts of grand theft auto. One was already scheduled to stand trial on charges of rape, disorderly conduct, and curfew violation. A third, apparently the driver, was brought in for questioning. Although police said they suspected the crash was intentional because one of the youths had been suspended from the library a week earlier for causing a disturbance, Freeman, who has been branch manager for 13 years, told the Dispatch she couldn’t connect what happened with any single incident. “There have been no unique situations,” she said. “I’ve heard that it wasn’t about me. I don’t know.” The branch reopened February 9. Freeman stopped by the library on her way home from the hospital to say she was worried about her coworkers and the inconvenience the crash has caused patrons. Posted February 10, 2006. |
