Providence Public Library and City Discuss Revised Governance
City councilors tabled a proposed ordinance February 2 that would have forced the Providence (R.I.) Public Library to place eight publicly appointed trustees—four chosen by the mayor and four by city council—on the library’s board. The ordinance, approved by the council’s finance committee January 23 as a result of continued calls for oversight of the library’s decision-making process, stipulates the restructuring of the board in order for the library to obtain city appropriations.
Councilman Luis A. Aponte said the proposal was tabled after library officials said they were willing to discuss more public representation on the board at its next trustee meeting, the Providence Journal reported February 3. The library prefers to address the future through its Strategic Planning Team, which is considering a variety of governance structures, including increasing the number of city trustee appointments from three to six.
