“I’ve heard of deer going through houses, but never turkeys going into a library,” said Branch Manager Judy Falzon in the April 8 South Bend Tribune. The accident scattered glass and knocked over rows of books, which delayed the library’s opening by an hour and a half so staff could clean up. The turkey, meanwhile, was disoriented but uninjured and took off under its own power.
Wild turkeys were introduced to nearby Potato Creek State Park in 1997, but they rarely venture into South Bend. Tim Cordell, a naturalist at the park, told the Associated Press that it is possible that the turkey lost his way while looking for females.
