IMLS Announces $17.3 Million in National Leadership GrantsThe Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded 41 grants totaling $17,349,361 for projects that “will help equip tomorrow’s libraries and museums to better meet the needs of a nation of learners.” Announced September 20, the 2005 National Leadership Grants are designed to support research and documentation, to help build digital resources, and to advance learning communities. The recipients are expected to match the awards with an additional $15,522,757.“Every National Leadership Grant helps to address a nationally recognized need such as promoting literacy, advancing science and technology, and preserving art, culture, and history,” said acting IMLS Director Mary L. Chute. “And because these projects are designed to be models they will help museums and libraries throughout the nation advance innovation and promote the idea of learning for a lifetime.” Grant projects include a collaboration led by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries to produce a series of educational workshops as part of the state’s centennial celebration; the Missouri Botanical Garden’s creation of a public web portal for online information on plants; the Civil Rights Digital Library Initiative, a partnership led by the University of Georgia to enhance understanding of the civil rights movement; Syracuse University’s expansion of its program to promote information literacy in high school and college; and an American Library Association survey of collaborative library networks. IMLS also announced 13 grants totaling $1,604,000 to improve library services in Native American tribal communities in Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin. The recipients are expected to match the grants with an additional $657,483. IMLS is the primary source of federal funds for the nation’s libraries and museums. Complete listings of grant recipients are available on the IMLS website. Posted September 23, 2005; modified October 17, 2005. |
