IMLS, Public Broadcasting Invest $1.4 Million in Community Education

The Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced September 27 that the Partnership for a Nation of Learners, an IMLS-CPB joint effort to encourage collaboration between cultural organizations, has awarded $1,447,022 to seven cooperative projects in seven states.

Among the award winners:

  • $249,626 to the Avampato Discovery Museum in Charleston, West Virginia, in partnership with the Kanawha County Library System and the West Virginia Public Broadcasting System, for “Healthy Habits for Life,” a program to educate young children and their caregivers about the essentials of healthy living.
  • $212,367 to Haines Borough (Alaska) Public Library, in partnership with Lynn Canal Broadcasting, for “Perspectives: Issues and Explorations,” a two-year project to educate rural Alaskans about the impact of alcohol and drug abuse.
  • $221,197 to Las Vegas–Clark County (Nev.) Library District. Building on the library’s successful “Computer-Assisted Literacy in Libraries” program and partnering with KLVX Communications, “Open Doors” will address the literacy needs of adults.
  • $249,837 to the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln, partnering with the Nebraska Library Commission and Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, for a program—based on the public television series Antiques Roadshow—to show families and museum and library staffers how to preserve their historical treasures.
  • $250,000 to the WGBH Educational Foundation in Boston for a partnership with Boston Public Library, the Boston Children’s Museum, Children’s Hospital Boston, and the Boston Public Health Commission for an asthma management campaign aimed at black and Latino children in neighborhoods with the highest incidence of asthma.

Formed last year to encourage public broadcasters, museums, and libraries to join forces to address community education needs, the Partnership for a Nation of Learners received 132 grant applications requesting more than $26 million. The seven winners are expected to match the awards with an additional $1.8 million.
