Wisconsin Librarians Raise Funds with (Nearly) Nude Calendar

Five library directors and one assistant director in central Wisconsin are appearing in “Desperate Librarians,” a calendar they produced and for which they posed seminude. The project will benefit six of the 17 member libraries of the Outagamie Waupaca Library System.

The women are seemingly naked in the pictures, covered only by oversized books. “There’s probably three photos taken of me that I like in my entire life, and two of them are in this calendar,” Ellen Connor, director of the Sturm Memorial Library in Manawa, said in the September 18 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The calendar idea started with a total of 12 librarians as a gag retirement gift for Craig Lahm, director of the Kaukana Public Library. The group soon learned, however, that producing a single calendar would require too much money and effort, so they decided to make multiple copies as a fundraiser. However, six of them balked at posing for a publicly available calendar and dropped out, letting the other six appear twice.

The calendars are an independent project; each librarian put up $200 to produce it. However, they all obtained permission from their library boards and agreed to donate any profits to the libraries.

In addition to Connor, the calendrical librarians are Peg Burington, assistant director of the Waupaca Area Public Library; Lucie Erickson, director of the Weyauwega Public Library; Lisa Hein, director of the Marion Public Library; Kathy Mitchell, director of the Clintonville Public Library; and Elizabeth Timmins, director of the Muehl Public Library in Seymour.
