Court Rules on Clinton Library Tax BreakThe Arkansas Supreme Court ruled October 27 that the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation is entitled to a multimillion-dollar economic-development tax break for constructing the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock. The Arkansas News Bureau reported October 28 that the court upheld the October 2004 decision by a Pulaski County Circuit Court judge that said the state economic-incentive program made no distinction between nonprofit and for-profit businesses when the foundation applied for the tax break in 2002.The state legislature restricted the program to “for profit” enterprises in 2003. Clinton Foundation President Skip Rutherford said, “We believed from the beginning that we qualified for this program and today’s decision by Arkansas’ highest court affirms that.” He told reporters that the actual amount the foundation expects to receive—between $2 and $3 million—is small compared to the $165-million cost of the library. Since it opened in November 2004, the Clinton Presidential Library has had more than 400,000 visitors. Posted October 28, 2005. |
