Crowe, Roy Seek ALA Presidency

The American Library Association Executive Board approved the Nominating Committee's selections for ALA presidential candidates at its October 28–29 fall meeting in Chicago. Seeking the 2007–2008 ALA presidency are William Crowe, head of the Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, and Loriene Roy, professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin.

The board also approved a roster of 51 nominees for the Association's governing Council. Petition candidates for president and Council have until 9 a.m. (CST) on January 30 to enter the race. The Nominating Committee's slate is scheduled to appear in the December issue of American Libraries, with petition candidates noted in subsequent issues as their names become available. The names of all candidates will also be posted on the ALA website.

The Executive Board also recommended that Council approve placing a dues increase on the Spring 2006 ballot. The measure calls for a $30 increase over three years. The last Association-wide dues increase was in 1995.

Electronic ballot information will be transmitted to all ALA members with valid e-mail addresses who are current as of January 31, 2006. Paper ballots will be sent to members in good standing who request them prior to March 3, 2006, by contacting the Member and Customer Service Department at 800-545-2433, press 5, or e-mailing membership@ala.org. Candidates' campaign statements will appear in the March issue of AL. Voting begins March 15, 2006.

Ismail Abdullahi of North Carolina Central University in Durham chaired the nine-member Nominating Committee.
