College Library Evacuated After StabbingMore than 100 people were evacuated from the Ventura (Calif.) College Library November 3 after a Fillmore man suffered multiple stab wounds in the facility’s second-floor men’s room. After Gabriel Vargas, 19, was found in the hallway just outside the restroom, library officials closed off the floor and called the police, who in turn closed the entire building for the rest of the day. Before escorting students on the second floor from the facility, police questioned them about what they had witnessed. Other students pointed out two men, Samuel Saldana, 19, and Anthony Navarez, 18, both from Santa Paula, who ran from police and were arrested off campus in connection with Vargas’s stabbing. Vargas is a full-time student at Ventura College, but officials had not yet determined whether Saldana and Navarez attend classes there. The 11-month-old library is open to the public. “We have no reason to believe this is anything more than an isolated incident,” campus spokesperson Alisa Sparkia Moore said in the November 4 Ventura County Star. Police said the attack was related to a feud between gangs in Fillmore and Santa Paula, adding that they were investigating a link to vandalism that had occurred on campus a day earlier.
