Former Clerk Leaves $350,000 to St. Louis PLSt. Louis Public Library has received $351,000 from a longtime employee whose salary never topped $20,000 a year.Known for his frugality—bringing a sack lunch of a bologna sandwich, graham crackers, and a thermos of milk nearly every day—George W. Kyle retired in 1985 after 46 years as a clerk for the library’s Carpenter branch, the Associated Press reported May 5. He died in 2003 at age 88, leaving the library what administrators say is likely the largest donation by a former employee. “I think everyone was a little surprised by the amount,” said Deputy Director Diane Freiermuth, who worked with Kyle for years. “But knowing George, I think they all could understand why he donated the money. He loved reading, and he loved books,” she said in the May 4 St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Interest earned from the endowment will be put toward adult and children’s books for the Carpenter branch, where the annual book budget is currently about $29,000. Posted May 6, 2005. |
