Providence to Reduce Branch HoursThe Providence (R.I.) Public Library announced May 4 that it plans to cut hours at all 10 branches beginning July 1, in response to Mayor David N. Cicilline’s proposed budget that marks the fifth straight year of level funding from the city. The library had requested $3.5 million for its operations, but the mayor allocated only $3 million.Library Director Dale Thompson said in a press release that the reduction would be at least 55 hours per week, but that all branches would remain open, and added that “the library’s goal is to avoid staff layoffs and implement a budget that includes raises for all members of the library staff,” who went without a salary increase last year. The library will hold 10 public meetings May 9–12 to discuss the budget cuts and the future of library services. PPL has been careful to listen to community concerns after it was scolded last October by the city council for not providing enough public accountability in the elimination of 21 staff positions, the Providence Journal noted May 5.
