Looted Book Returned to Rome

A 17th-century book taken from the Rabbinic College of Rome by Nazis in 1943 has been returned to Rome’s chief rabbi, the Associated Press reported May 23.

“We thought the collection had been returned in its entirety, but it evidently isn’t true,” said Dario Tedeschi, head of the Italian Commission for the recovery of Jewish bibliographic heritage. The commission received the book in early May from a Dutch scholar, who in turn had obtained it from a German family.

The pocket-sized book, which contains the first five books of the Bible and the Prophets, was published in Amsterdam in 1680. The book is in good condition overall, although some pages are missing.

More than 7,000 volumes from the college, including some ancient manuscripts, were seized by a special unit of the Nazi Foreign Political Office charged with rounding up all writings by Jews and Freemasons. Most of the collection was returned by American forces in 1946, but part remains missing.
