Indianapolis PL to Resume Construction after Long Delay

Officials at Indianapolis Public Library have reached an agreement with a steel contractor who had requested an additional payment to recover costs caused by long construction delays. IPL Board President Louis Mahern said in the May 5 Indianapolis Star that the library will pay up to $2 million extra to Hagerman Construction—half of its original claim—to allow construction to resume this spring.

In 2004, workers discovered cracks and holes in the concrete foundation at the central library’s expansion site, triggering several lawsuits and months of repairs before steel construction could begin. The library estimates the remaining work will take another two years to complete.

Mahern told the Star that he expects the additional cost will be paid from settlements of the pending lawsuits the library has filed against other contractors. The project was funded with $59.7 million in tax dollars and $43 million in private donations.
