LC Adds Madison Papers to American Memory Website

The papers of James Madison, one of 23 presidential collections held by the Library of Congress, have been placed online on the library’ s American Memory website.

The online Madison collection consists of approximately 12,000 items captured in some 72,000 digital images, including correspondence, personal notes, drafts of letters and legislation, an autobiography, legal and financial documents, and miscellaneous manuscripts. Highlights include a copy of Thomas Jefferson’s notes from the Continental Congress of 1776, including Jefferson’s copy of the Declaration of Independence as amended by Congress. Among Madison’s correspondents were Jefferson, Dolly Madison, James Monroe, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, and Noah Webster.

The American Memory website now offers more than 10 million items from LC’s collections and other repositories. The presidential papers of Washington, Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln are already online, with others to be added.
