First Lady Presents Library, Museum Community Service Awards

First Lady Laura Bush presented the 2004 National Awards for Museum and Library Service to three museums and three libraries in a ceremony at the Hotel Washington in the nation’s capital March 14.

Given by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the awards recognize “institutions that have demonstrated a perpetual, long-term commitment to public service through innovative programs and community partnerships.” The library winners were Flint (Mich.) Public Library, the Mayaguez Children’s Library in Puerto Rico, and the Regional Academic Health Center Medical Library at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

“As a former schoolteacher and librarian, I know that museums and libraries are true treasures for discovery and learning,” Bush said. “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to recognize all of these wonderful institutions.”

“Museums and libraries play a powerful role in building and sustaining the communities that are the foundation of American democracy today,” said IMLS Director Robert S. Martin. A library, he said, must be “a place—both physical and virtual—that understands its unique ability and duty to respond to the needs of those in the immediate community, and in many cases far beyond.”

Library and museum representatives accepted the awards alongside individuals whose lives have been changed for the better as a result of the programs and services offered by the institutions. Museum winners were the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Zoological Society of San Diego, and the Western Folklife Center in Elko, Nevada.
