Supremacist Admits Gutting Holocaust VideosAn avowed white supremacist has told Riverside, Illinois, police that he ruined five videotapes in the city library collection because he believed the films are full of lies.Richard Mayers, 33, was arrested July 12 and charged with one count of misdemeanor criminal damage to property in the July 5 destruction of Holocaust-themed holdings including Anne Frank Remembered and a documentary about the November 9–10, 1938, Nazi-led pogrom known as Kristallnacht. Several weeks earlier, Mayers announced at a city council meeting that he would be seeking a park permit for a White Aryan Supremacist Party rally, according to the July 14 Chicago Tribune. In a written statement regarding the alleged library vandalism, Mayers admitted to pulling the videotape out of five videocassettes and leaving the tape itself on the Riverside Public Library floor for the staff to find. Since he did not threaten or physically assault anyone, he could not be charged with a hate crime and was released on $100 bail on the day of his arrest. Posted July 15, 2005. |
