Strike Averted in Toronto
Toronto Public Library officials announced a tentative agreement July 14 with library workers, subject to approval by the Toronto Civic Employees’ Union, Local 416 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. A ratification vote is expected within a week. The agreement was reached prior to the strike deadline the same day.
“We are pleased with what has been achieved,” said City Librarian Josephine Bryant. “The negotiations have been tough, but have also resulted in a fair and reasonable agreement.”
TPL is Canada’s largest public library, with 99 branches. CUPE 416 represents approximately 2,400 library workers, both professional and support staff.
