Harvard Wants Library Worker to Help with Court Costs

Harvard University attorneys filed a motion June 28 seeking $3,319 in reimbursement court costs from Desiree Goodwin, the Harvard library assistant who lost a federal discrimination lawsuit against the university in April.

“It’s a federal statute that allows prevailing parties to recover a small portion of some of the costs,” Harvard spokesman Joe Wrinn said in the June 30 Boston Herald. “I’m told that it’s fairly routine.” However, Goodwin’s attorney Richard Clarey said he’d never seen it done against a plaintiff with so few assets. “I’m already under a lot of financial strain,” Goodwin told the paper. “I have $43,000 in student loan debt [and] I took out a home equity line of credit to pay for my legal fees.”
