Illinois Librarian Sentenced for Theft

Former Homer Township (Ill.) Library Director Regetta Meyers, who was convicted in October of stealing more than $157,000 from the library’s petty cash account, was sentenced January 4 to six months in jail and ordered to pay the library $100,000 in restitution.

Circuit Court Judge Gerald Kinney also directed Meyers to serve 48 months of probation and 100 hours of community service, the Chicago Tribune reported January 5.

Library board President Barry Levine said the district will vigorously pursue its civil suits against Meyers and several accountants who had worked on the library’s ledgers. Trustees are seeking to recover the total amount of funds stolen since 1992, which could be as much as $320,000.

“What I want is for this library district to be made as whole as possible,” Levine said in the January 5 Chicago Daily Southtown. “Where that money comes from, I don’t really care.”
