Pennsylvania Legislator Wants Tax Break for Libraries

State Rep. Thomas Corrigan Sr. (D-Bucks County) has proposed exempting Pennsylvania libraries from state sales tax. The measure, if passed, would allow libraries to hold book sales without being liable for state tax. Corrigan said in the February 23 Levittown Bucks County Courier Times that tax relief is “the least” the legislature could do for libraries with “lean budgets.”

“Libraries can be a key economic development component by providing information and resources to small business owners,” he told the paper. “They enhance the quality of life for our residents.”

Martina Kominiarek, executive director of the Bucks County Free Library, said that a tax break would mean local libraries could keep all the profits from a book sale. “This would also reduce the amount of paperwork we do [after the sales] and all the libraries in the state would welcome this,” she added. In 2004, her library paid more than $2,000 in sales tax.
