Bush Budget May Delay Nixon Archives Transfer

The transfer of Richard Nixon’s archives to his presidential library may be delayed because President Bush’s 2006 budget did not include the National Archives and Records Administration’s request of nearly $3 million to cover the move.

Unless Congress restores the necessary funds, the transfer of papers and tapes to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, California, won’t happen until at least 2007, said Sharon Fawcett, acting assistant archivist for presidential libraries. “It’s going to be very difficult to move things around and make do without it because NARA took some other serious cuts in the 2006 budget proposal,” she said in a February 24 Associated Press report.

Nixon Library officials had also hoped to get $4 million to build a new wing to store the new records, and aides to Rep. Gary Miller (R-Calif.)—who represents Yorba Linda—said he still expects to be able to get the money for the addition.
